Is your bedroom making you sick?

Is your bedroom causing symptoms? Find out how hidden toxins in your cozy space could be messing with your health!

Mattress Toxicity

  • Mattresses are required to be flame-retardant, often using toxic flame-retardant chemicals to comply with federal law. However, they are not required to label or disclose anything about what their mattresses are made with unless certified organic
  • There are 107 known carcinogens in mattress manufacturing
  • The body is not capable of processing these chemicals which build up over time. It’s been connected to thyroid problems, brain function issues, cancer and more. Now, it’s even showing up in breast milk and blood tests.
  • Memory foam mattresses are the worst offenders - full of chemicals and they don't stop releasing chemicals for the life of the mattress
  • When you are sleeping your body is trying to repair so it’s very important to have a non-toxic sleeping environment

Tips to Minimize Mattress Toxicity

  • Replace your mattress with a pure organic wool/cotton innerspring mattress.
  • If you can’t afford a new mattress right now, you can get a pure organic wool topper which helps but doesn’t fix it totally. I would get one that’s at least 3 inches thick.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs)

  • EMFs are a type of radiation that are natural to both the earth and to the human body at a low intensity.
  • Technological advancements have made artificial EMFs more common, which are more powerful than natural EMFs and can disrupt normal function by interrupting the human body's natural energetic field.
  • Artificial EMFs can change your DNA, sleep patterns, immune function, cause headaches, brain fog and what they call ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). It can also make you tired, depressed and moody.
  • Common sources of EMFs are phones, computers, and wifi. Radiation coming from EMFs is worsened by anything metallic.

Tips to Minimize EMFs

  • Don't sleep in the same room as your cell phone. If you must, be at least 3 feet away and put it on airplane mode.
  • Don't carry your cell phone in your pocket or keep it on your body.
  • Get EMF cases for your phone and laptop. I recommend Defender Shield
  • Get EMF stickers to keep on your phone and devices and for your room from Hedron
  • If possible, turn off your wifi at night while your body is repairing.
  • If you have a smart meter, call the utility company to get it switched out!  Here is some more information on smart meters.

Humidifiers

  • I recommend steering clear of humidifiers - they tend to grow bacteria from the warm moisture.
  • If you breathe in bacteria from humidifiers at night, it’s one more thing your body has to deal with fighting off.
  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has found that bacteria and fungi often grow in the tanks humidifiers and can be released in the mist. This can cause flu like symptoms and even infections as well as stimulate allergies or asthma.

New Carpet

  • New carpet chemicals usually include toluene, benzene, formaldehyde, ethyl benzene, styrene, acetone and a ton of others. Some of these have been determined hazardous or carcinogenic by the EPA.
  • The glue used to install carpet also has toxic chemicals, including flame retardants as described in the mattress section.
  • Symptoms from prolonged exposure can include nerve damage, dizziness, nausea and respiratory illness.

Tips to Minimize Carpet Toxicity

  • Try to avoid new carpet or get non-toxic carpet. Also consider using staples instead of carpet glue
