Why nothing seems to last: better worse rollercoaster

Why nothing seems to work: better worse rollercoaster

If you have ever said, “I was doing better… and now I feel bad again,” this is for you.

This pattern is exhausting.

You try something new.
You feel hopeful.
You notice a little progress.
Then you feel worse again.

So you start wondering:

Was it working?
Did I do something wrong?
Why can’t my body just stay better?
Why does this keep happening?

If this has been your pattern, it does not mean your body is broken.

A lot of the time, it means your nervous system is switched.

What the nervous system is supposed to do

Your nervous system is the communication system between your brain and your body.

It tells your body what to do.
When to speed up.
When to slow down.
When to rest.
When to digest.
When to react.
When to calm down.

It helps control things like:

  • heart rate
  • digestion
  • breathing
  • stress response
  • energy
  • sleep
  • how your body responds to treatment

So if the nervous system is not regulating properly, the whole body can start acting confusing.

Because the communication is off.

The gas and the brakes

There are two big parts of this system that matter here.

The sympathetic nervous system is like the gas pedal.

It helps you gear up.
It gets you ready to act.
It is your fight-or-flight side.
It pushes energy out.

The parasympathetic nervous system is like the brake.

It helps you slow down.
It helps you rest.
It helps you digest.
It helps your body repair and recover.

You need both.

The gas is not bad.
The brake is not bad.

They are both supposed to work together.

The gas helps you respond when you need to.
The brake helps your body calm down and do the healing work.

That balance is what keeps the body steady and communicating properly with itself.

What happens when the system is switched

When the nervous system is switched, that normal pattern gets reversed.

The gas and the brakes stop doing their jobs the right way.

So when you push on the gas, you get the brakes.
And when you push on the brakes, you get the gas.

That is where the chaos starts.

Because now the body is not responding the way it should.

Something that should help can seem to do the opposite.
Something that seems to work can suddenly stop working.
Something that should calm the body can ramp it up instead.
Something that should move things forward can make you feel like you went backward.

That is why the better/worse cycle feels so confusing.

It is not random.

The communication between your nervous system and your body is reversed.

Why that creates a roller coaster

Your nervous system rules so much of what your body does.

So when the signaling is reversed, the body becomes inconsistent.

You may feel better for a little while.
Then worse again.
Then better again.
Then worse again.

You may think:

“This helped me yesterday. Why is it making me feel worse today?”
“Why do I calm down for a minute, then feel wired again?”
“Why can’t my body hold progress?”

The answer is often that the body is not regulating properly.

It is getting mixed signals.

And when the signals are mixed, the results are mixed too.

What this can look like

When the nervous system is switched, people often feel like they are on a roller coaster.

They can have:

  • progress that does not last
  • symptoms that come and go
  • days where they feel hopeful, then suddenly crash
  • things that seem to help, then stop helping
  • reactions that do not make sense

This is why people say:

  • “I get better, then worse again.”
  • “I can’t get consistent progress.”
  • “I feel like I am doing everything right and still sliding backward.”

That pattern is not in your head.

It usually means the switching has not been addressed yet.

Why this happens

This does not happen out of nowhere.

As the body gets more overwhelmed, it can start to short circuit.

That overwhelm usually builds over time.

The body gets inflamed.
Digestion gets compromised.
The immune system gets more reactive.
The load keeps building.

At a certain point, the body can get overwhelmed enough that the nervous system starts misfiring. That is when switching can happen.

So the better/worse cycle is usually not the real problem. It is a clue, a communication. It tells you the body is overwhelmed enough that its regulation is no longer working the way it should.

Why chasing symptoms does not solve it

This is where people lose so much time. They keep focusing on the symptom that got worse.

The fatigue.
The bloating.
The brain fog.
The sleep.
The food reactions.
The headaches.

But when the nervous system is switched, the symptom is usually not the main problem. The switching is. Because if the body is reversed in how it responds, you can keep chasing symptoms and still never get stable progress.

You may get temporary relief. But then the body swings the other way again.

Why normal labs do not explain this

This is another reason people stay stuck for so long.

They do the testing.
They wait for answers.
And then they hear:

“Everything looks normal.” But the kind of problem that creates switching usually does not show up on standard labs. That is why people can have very real symptoms, very inconsistent progress, and still be told everything is “fine.”

Just because your labs are normal does not mean your symptoms are not physical and fixable. It often means the real underlying source has not been found yet.

What actually has to happen

The better/worse cycle does not break by trying more random things. It does not break by pushing harder. It breaks when you find out what is causing the switching. That is the key.

Because until the cause of the switching is addressed, the body will keep responding in reverse. That is why something can seem like it is working… and then suddenly not work. Or even seem to do the opposite.

Once the cause of the switching is found and handled, the nervous system can start regulating the way it should again. Then the body can finally begin to hold progress.

The bottom line

If you feel better, then worse again, it does not mean your body is broken. A lot of the time, it means your nervous system is switched. It is like the gas and the brakes got reversed.

And because your nervous system controls the communication between your brain and body, that reversal can create chaos. The body starts responding in the opposite way from what it should. That is why progress feels like a roller coaster.

And until the real underlying source of that switching is found, the cycle usually keeps repeating. Once that source is found, the pattern starts to make sense. And that is when progress can finally start feeling steady.
